The word ‘halal’ means permissible. In Islam it means the things that are lawful to do according to the Islamic law.
In Islam every single thing is listed under its law. The laws are halal and haram. Halal means things that are permissible, Haram means things that are forbidden.
In this particular context, halal is used in reference to food product/additives/ingredients/contact materials, meat products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
All foods are considered halal except:
Out of the items classified as haram or halal are mashbooh, or items that not clearly haram or halal and require further information to classify them – mashbooh means doubtful or questionable. Foods that may contain gelatin, enzymes, emulsifiers or flavours are mashbooh, due the uncertainty of the origins of their components.
All animal and poultry meats should be processed according to Zabiha or Dhabiha, which is the acceptable method of animal or bird slaughter by a Muslim according to Islamic laws and requirements as defined in the Holy Quran (revealed Divine Book), the Hadith (saying of the last Prophet Muhammad, Peace and Blessing be Upon Him), and in the Fiqh (Jurisprudence) of the Muslim juries: Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali.
Classification of items as Halal is a sensitive and serious responsibility which can only be undertaken by a Muslim expert, authority or scholar who is well versed in Islamic dietary laws
